Deep Sea Fishing
Offshore fishing, often referred to as big-game fishing, is popular year round in the Coastal Bend. While warmer months offer more comfortable conditions and greater variety of species, winter can be very productive for yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Popular fair-weather species include red snapper, king mackerel, wahoo, sharks, ling cobia, amberjack, tuna, dorado or dolphin. billfish, grouper and a variety of other reef fish.
Port Aransas to Rockport is said to be the most promising area for offshore fishing in the Coastal Bend. But with the recent opening of Packery Channel from Corpus Christi Bay to the gulf, offshore boats have better access to southern waters far offshore of Padre Island. Whether in a private boat or charter boat, sport fishermen can enjoy blue water year round. Several party boat outfits and dozens of charter boats operate out of Port Aransas. Prices start at about $55 for a five-hour party boat trip to the gulf and run about $100 for a 12-hour adventure. Charter boats are also available for more private parties. Most charter captains limit the number of passengers to between two and six. Rates start around $2,500 for eight-hour trips.
